A couple who lost their jobs due to the pandemic found a new start as they ventured into selling special turon.
Joen and Jas Chozas used to be Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) working as chefs. Due to the pandemic, they were forced to return to the Philippines. For six months, they had no income at all. Since they were chefs, they decided to venture into the business with food in mind.
Joen recalled that their idea for their special turon came when he requested a less oily version from his wife.
“Kapag medyo stressed, ang hahanapin mo agad ay pagkain. Kaya nag-request ako sa misis ko na kung pwede magprepare siya ng turon kasi yun ang paborito ko, “Joen shared on GMA’s Pera Paraan.
“But I like it very much. So, I don’t know how to remove the powder to eliminate the need for oil. So, doon nagcome up ang idea na masarap pala ito, ”he added.
The couple only needed P3,000 to start their House of Turon business. Now, they are earning over P24,000 to P40,000 a month.
They purchase their bananas directly from farmers for P20 to P25 per kilo. Not only do only get to save a few bucks, but they also help local farmers.
Each special flavored turon costs P38. Considering all their overhead expenses, you can earn a profit of P15 in a piece of turon.
They have over 16 flavors available, and their bestseller includes macapu-ron, cheesy-ron, choco-ron, langka-ron, and ube-ron. You can also buy a bilao with 15 pieces of turon.
According to Joen, turon was a reminder that God is always faithful to them. Despite the challenges they faced, they were able to start over and were blessed even more.
“Turon, ang ibig sabihin sa amin nun ay ‘to run’. Ibig sabihin, it times of challenges, trials, and hardships, you’re the best option is to run to God, “Joen explained.
How to make macapu-ron
In a pan, simmer water, add sugar, pour in fresh macapuno. Cook until it becomes thick. In a kilo of macapuno, you can make 40 to 45 pieces of turon. Set aside to cool.
Once the macapuno filling is cool, you can start assembling your turon. Slice the banana lengthwise and roll it on a special sugar-milk coating. Set it on a lumpia wrapper, add the macapuno filling, and fold the wrapper to close.
Deep fry the turon in oil. Once cooked, roll it back in the special sugar-milk coating. Drizzle with syrup and serve.
